The development of the Makeway Lab began in July 2013 and has involved many conversations, some failures and plenty of successes.

Some of the highlights invclude:

  1. meetings with staff and patients in south east Queensland and northern NSW to research and explore the potential for the Makeway Lab.

  2. gaining the support from universities, health care providers. the creative and social enterprise sectors.

  3. engaging design, fabrication and electronics experts to design and build the mobile Makeway Lab.

  4. promoting the Makeway Lab's development and potential at Art & Health conferences in Port Macquarie, Brisbane and Melbourne.

  5. in March 16 John was invited onto the Arts & Health Leadership Group, for Queensland.

  6. in April 16 we commenced a trial with Spiral Nambour. Spiral is a not-for-profit organisation who provide an environment of self-determination for people with multiple disabilities on the Sunshine Coast. Spiral’s programs aim to help people build capacity, link into their communities, access leisure and recreational interests, learning and vocational opportunities to become valued members of their communities. The Makeway Lab residency (to October 2016) aims to enhance Spiral’s programs and include both creative and design for health applications. The residency will lead to a showcase exhibition in September as part of the Sunshine Coast 'Horizon Arts Festival' and include a Sensory Space featuring the participants work.

  7. launching our first ENewsletter to broadcast the Makeway Lab activities.

  8. meeting with the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital School, Principal and Deputy to discuss a program with the Makeway Lab.

  9. in May 16 we have been invited to showcase the Makeway Lab at the 'EduTech Convention', the Asia-Pacific and Southern Hemisphere’s largest education event.

  10. we have been invited to present the project at the Arts & Health Conference at Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney 16 - 18 November 2016.
